The long way round.
Our story
- 2008
Carl-Johan Kihlbom starts Elabs in Gothenburg. Over at Doberman, Jon Kindell and Johan Halse are building the first version of SVT Play.
- 2011
Elabs releases Capybara. It becomes how Rubyists test their web apps.
- 2012
Elabs releases Pundit. Authorization for Rails, the simple way. Over 100 million downloads now, and we still maintain it.
- 2013
Jon Kindell and Johan Halse, both out of Doberman, start Varvet.
Lärarförbundet and Verbum are the first clients through the door.
- 2016
Elabs and Varvet join forces. The same year, we help Forsman & Bodenfors launch Zlatan Ibrahimović's brand A-Z, a campaign app that shipped in eleven countries.
- 2017
A Webby for Wealthsimple, built with our friends at Doberman. A Stockholm office, and our own conference, Ship It.
via BetaKit Anton at Dockspot comes looking for a new agency. We rebuild their marina-booking platform, used across ten European countries, and we are still building it with them today.
- 2018
Varvet becomes part of Universal Avenue. We keep our name, our team and our way of working, and the work does not stop, like the Liseberg app, built with Creuna for Scandinavia’s biggest park.
via tech.eu - 2019
The Liseberg app wins Svenska Designpriset. Half a million downloads its first season.
- 2020
Universal Avenue's story turns a different way. We buy our independence back. Same name, same craft, on our own again.
- 2021
Alumni Ventures comes knocking, one of America's largest venture networks. We have built for them ever since.
- 2022
We start working with Volvo Car Mobility on Volvo on Demand, car sharing engineered to scale.
- 2023
Bestow, brand and product for a US life-insurance fintech. Forbes takes note.
After a decade, our work for Lärarförbundet winds down. The teachers union becomes Sveriges Lärare. Thank you for the ride.
- 2025
A hard lesson. We put a hundred thousand dollars of work into a fintech startup that went up in smoke. It is tough out there. We keep building.
- Today
Independent, and only getting started. Anyone can build now. Getting it right is the rare part, and that is the work we want for years to come.
